Types of Box Frame Roller Gates

Box Frame Roller Gate (BFRG)

For clear opening widths up to 500 feet the Box Frame Roller Gate (BFRG) can secure extraordinarily large openings and, depending on size and application, can be manually operated or automated.  Based on gate panel weight the automated version can operate at speeds up to 3 feet per second (larger gates weighing more than 5000 pounds are limited to a speed of 1 foot per second).  For example, a single BFRG having a clear opening of 190 feet x 8’ high with standard 2” x 2” x 9 gauge steel chain link infill would weigh about 4,550 pounds and could be matched with an operator that can power it at 3 feet per second.  A well-designed track, trolly and stabilizer system allows the BFRG to perform well in higher wind conditions.  Typical applications include airfield runways to control aircraft and vehicular traffic, and to secure airfield hanger locations.

Telescoping Box Frame Roller Gate (TBFRG)

For applications where there is limited space on either side of an opening the Telescoping version of the Box Frame Roller Gate (TBFRG) is an excellent option.  It requires a roll-back space, when in the open position, of 60% to 75% of the clear opening width and utilizes the same track, trolly and stabilizer system as the standard Box Frame Roller Gate.  Single gate clear opening widths to 83 feet, bi-parting to 166 feet.  If automated, speeds up to 2.2 feet per second.

When choosing a box frame roller gates, consider the size of the opening and available storage space. Each of our large opening gates offers unique benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

TYMETAL has been in the perimeter security solutions market since 1985. With more than three decades of experience designing, manufacturing, and installing Box Frame Roller Gates, we have encountered many questions along the way. Explore a few of the common questions we are asked below. If you don’t find the answers you’re looking for, feel free to contact us by phone at 888-978-4283 or online.

What defines a large-span gate application and which industries require them?

TYMETAL defines large-span gates as those requiring exceptionally wide or tall openings beyond the range of standard gate products — typically for aircraft hangars, shipyards, rail facilities, large industrial plants, and military installations where oversize vehicles, equipment, or aircraft must pass through a secured entry point.

How are large-scale gate systems engineered for wind load and structural stability?

TYMETAL large-span gates are engineered with reinforced structural aluminum frames, intermediate stiffeners, and support systems designed to resist wind loads calculated for the installation site. Box frame and telescoping designs distribute panel forces across multiple support points, preventing deflection and maintaining alignment across wide openings that would cause lighter-gauge panels to flex or rack.

What safety and automation controls are used for oversized gates?

TYMETAL large-span gates are compatible with heavy-duty electromechanical and hydraulic operator systems scaled to the gate’s weight and required cycle force. Safety systems including multiple obstruction sensors, photo eyes at varying heights, and audible/visual warning systems are typically required and can be integrated with the gate’s control panel to protect personnel and vehicles during operation.

Are there modular or sectional designs available for transportation and installation?

Yes. TYMETAL offers telescoping and multi-panel designs for large-span applications that allow the gate system to be transported in sections and assembled on site. Box frame roller gates and telescoping box frame systems are specifically designed to handle large openings by dividing the gate into multiple sliding panels that stack or nest when open.

What maintenance protocols ensure smooth operation of oversized industrial gates?

Large-span TYMETAL gates require more frequent inspection of roller assemblies, track alignment, and drive system loads than standard gates due to the greater forces involved. Track and roller surfaces should be kept clean and lubricated, structural connections inspected for fatigue, and operator systems serviced per manufacturer intervals. A scheduled preventive maintenance program is strongly recommended for continuous-duty installations.
