Frequently Asked Questions
TYMETAL has been in the perimeter security solutions market since 1985. With more than three decades of experience designing, manufacturing, and installing Crash-Rated Gates, we have encountered many questions along the way. Explore a few of the common questions we are asked below. If you don’t find the answers you’re looking for, feel free to contact us by phone at 888-978-4283 or online.
What gate styles does TYMETAL offer in crash-rated configurations?
TYMETAL offers crash-rated versions of cantilever slide gates, swing gates, and vertical lift gates. Product lines include the TCG-4 and TCG-12 cantilever slide gates, the TCSG-4 and TCSG-12 swing gates, and crash-rated vertical lift gate systems — all tested to ASTM F2656 and U.S. DoS K-rating standards at K4 and K12 certification levels.
What crash test standards do TYMETAL crash-rated gates meet?
TYMETAL crash-rated gates are tested and certified to ASTM F2656 (Standard Test Method for Vehicle Crash Testing of Perimeter Barriers) and U.S. Department of State K-rating standards. Certifications include K4 (M30/P1) and K12 (M50/P1) ratings, which define the vehicle weight and impact speed the gate is certified to stop with minimal penetration distance.
How do crash-rated gates differ structurally from standard security gates?
Crash-rated gates incorporate significantly reinforced post and frame connections, and engineered foundation anchor systems not present in standard gates. The structural members are sized to absorb and redirect the kinetic energy of a vehicle strike, transferring load into the foundation system rather than allowing gate penetration or collapse.
Can TYMETAL crash gates be retrofitted into existing security perimeters?
Retrofitting a crash-rated gate into an existing perimeter is possible in many cases, but requires evaluation of the existing foundation, post embedment, and surrounding fence or barrier systems. TYMETAL can provide engineering review to determine whether existing conditions support crash-rated installation or whether foundation upgrades are required to achieve full certification.
What maintenance protocols are required for crash-rated gates?
Crash-rated gates require all the same maintenance as standard gates — lubrication, alignment checks, and coating inspection — plus periodic review of foundation anchor integrity and structural fastener torque. After any vehicle impact, regardless of severity, the gate and foundation must be professionally inspected and certified before returning to service.
