TYM-VSA Telescoping Box Frame Roller Gate and Operator System
Product Notes
- Closes single clear opening widths up to 83’ and double clear openings up to 166’.
- Powered by a TYM-VSA variable speed operator; speeds to 2.2 feet per second.
Product Summary
The automated version of the Telescoping Box Frame Roller Gate (US Patent #8,181,689 B2) is integrated with a TYM-VSA variable speed gate operator. As with the manual version, it’s an ideal alternative for sites having limited space on either side of an opening. The required roll-back space, when in the open position, is 60% to 75% of the clear opening width. For example, a 60-foot opening would require less than 37 feet of roll-back space when in the open position.
Features & Benefits
- TYM-VSA Operator: Features include Soft Start/Stop; speed adjustable from 1.2 to 2.2 feet per second; manual hand crank for use during power outage; 10-gauge steel enclosure with correctional grade lock.
- Meets ASTM F 2200 and is UL325 Classes III and IV compliant.
- Stability in high wind conditions, as it utilizes same ground track, roller wheel trolley and stabilizing system as the Box Frame Roller Gate.
- When in the open position (Parked Length), stores in 60% to 75% of the clear opening width. Formula: Parked Length = (Clear Opening + 13 feet)/2.

Frequently Asked Questions
TYMETAL has been in the perimeter security solutions market since 1985. With more than three decades of experience designing, manufacturing, and installing the TYM-VSA Telescoping Box Frame Roller Gate and Operator System, we have encountered many questions along the way. Explore a few of the common questions we are asked below. If you don’t find the answers you’re looking for, feel free to contact us by phone at 888-978-4283 or online.
How does the variable-span architecture improve flexibility in restricted installations?
The TYM-VSA Telescoping Box Frame system divides the gate into multiple panels that nest together as the gate opens, significantly reducing the back-clearance requirement compared to a single-panel cantilever of equivalent width. This makes it viable for large openings at sites where lateral space limitations would prevent installation of a full-length single-panel gate.
What safety mechanisms prevent derailment or system overload?
The TYM-VSA telescoping system incorporates roller guides and end stops that keep the gate panels on track throughout the full range of travel, preventing derailment under wind load or operational forces. The drive system is configured with overload protection that stops operation if the gate encounters an obstruction, protecting the structural system from damage due to binding or forced operation.
How does this system integrate with existing access control?
The TYM-VSA Telescoping system uses standard gate operator interfaces compatible with existing access control infrastructure including card readers, vehicle loop detectors, and security management platforms. TYMETAL provides standard control panel configurations and wiring documentation to support integration with both new and retrofit access control installations.
What routine inspection steps ensure the telescoping system’s longevity?
Routine inspection of the TYM-VSA Telescoping system includes checking roller bearing condition and lubrication, verifying panel alignment and travel, inspecting the telescoping guide system for wear or debris, and confirming drive system function across the full open-and-close cycle. The multi-panel system’s additional mechanical complexity warrants more frequent inspection than single-panel gate designs.
