Frequently Asked Questions

TYMETAL has been in the perimeter security solutions market since 1985. With more than three decades of experience designing, manufacturing, and installing the TCF-M40-P1 (K8), we have encountered many questions along the way. Explore a few of the common questions we are asked below. If you don’t find the answers you’re looking for, feel free to contact us by phone at 888-978-4283 or online.

What is the difference in performance between P1 and P2 in same-rated (K8) fencing?

For TCF M40 K8 fencing, the P1 variant stops a vehicle within 1 meter of the fence face, while the P2 variant allows a greater penetration distance. The P1 rating requires heavier structural members, closer post spacing, and deeper foundations than P2 to achieve the tighter penetration limit. P1 is specified where standoff distance is limited and minimal vehicle intrusion is required.

How is the M40 P1 fence engineered to absorb impact energy?

The TCF M40 P1 fence uses heavy structural steel posts at engineered spacing, with rail and infill systems designed to transfer the kinetic energy of an M40-class vehicle strike through the rail-to-post connections and into the deeply embedded post foundations. The P1 energy absorption requirement is met by sizing the structural system to remain within the certified deformation envelope without exceeding the 1-meter penetration limit.

What foundation depth and reinforcement do these fences require?

The TCF M40 P1 K8 fence requires reinforced concrete foundations with post embedment depths and rebar layouts specified by TYMETAL based on the K8 certification parameters. These foundations are deeper and more heavily reinforced than those required for K4 systems, reflecting the greater impact energy of the M40 test vehicle at K8-rated speeds.

Can gateways or crash-rated gates be aligned with this fence rating?

Yes. TYMETAL designs K8-rated gate products to integrate with the TCF M40 K8 fence line for a consistent perimeter rating. Gate products must be independently certified to K8 or higher to maintain the perimeter’s rating at access openings. Contact TYMETAL for K8-compatible gate options and fence-to-gate transition details.
