Frequently Asked Questions

TYMETAL has been in the perimeter security solutions market since 1985. With more than three decades of experience designing, manufacturing, and installing the TCF-M40-P2 (K8), we have encountered many questions along the way. Explore a few of the common questions we are asked below. If you don’t find the answers you’re looking for, feel free to contact us by phone at 888-978-4283 or online.

What crash rating does TCF M40 P2 achieve and under what conditions?

The TYMETAL TCF M40 P2 K8 fence is certified to ASTM F2656 M40/P2, stopping a vehicle of M40-specified mass at the K8-rated impact speed with a penetration distance within the P2 classification. K8 represents an intermediate threat level between the K4 and K12 ratings in Tymetal’s crash fence product line.

What are the structural differences between P1 and P2 variants?

A P2-rated fence stops a vehicle within a greater penetration distance than a P1 system of the same K-rating, meaning the P2 structure absorbs energy over a longer deformation length. P1-rated systems require heavier post sections, closer spacing, and more robust rail connections to achieve the tighter penetration limit. P2 designs allow for slightly less structural mass while still meeting their certified stop distance.

How is the fence anchored to withstand vehicle impact?

The TCF M40 P2 K8 fence uses steel posts embedded in reinforced concrete foundations designed to resist the pullout and lateral forces generated during a K8-rated vehicle impact. Foundation depth, concrete strength, and rebar reinforcement are specified by TYMETAL based on the certified crash test parameters and must be constructed to specification to maintain valid certification.

Can this fence integrate with gates or bollards in a unified perimeter system?

Yes. TYMETAL’s TCF M40 P2 K8 fence is designed to integrate with K8-compatible crash-rated access control products. When transitioning to adjacent K4 or K12 barriers, the perimeter’s overall security classification is determined by the lowest-rated component, so TYMETAL recommends matching all barrier ratings across the full perimeter where consistent vehicle impact resistance is required.

What is the recommended repair or inspection process after impact events?

After any vehicle strike, the impacted fence section must be taken out of service and inspected by qualified personnel for structural deformation, anchor pullout, and foundation damage. Damaged posts and rail sections must be replaced using TYMETAL-specified components to restore the certified crash rating, and the foundation should be inspected for cracking or displacement before the replacement section is installed.
