Types of Crash-Rated Beams

Relating to crash impact performance, TYMETAL crash-rated beams are offered in K4 (TCRB-4) and K12 (TCRB-12) crash performance levels. The TCRB-4 has an ASTM F2656 M30-P1 crash test rating, and the TCRB-12 has ASTM F2656-M50-P1. They can withstand the impact of a 15,000-pound vehicle traveling at either 30 mph (M30-P1) or 50 mph (M50-P1), which are the highest M category ratings possible. They are both available in automated as well as manually operated versions.

Commercial Crash Barriers by TYMETAL

Now more than ever before, commercial, industrial, and military facilities as well as other large installations must implement strict security measures to protect themselves. Safeguarding property and the people and assets housed within them is mission critical. We understand that those intent on inflicting maximum harm may use heavy vehicles to crash through security structures to access their target facility. Facilities that do not have an effective crash barrier in place may be unable to prevent a potentially catastrophic event. Frequently Asked Questions

TYMETAL has been in the perimeter security solutions market since 1985. With more than three decades of experience designing, manufacturing, and installing Crash-Rated Beams, we have encountered many questions along the way. Explore a few of the common questions we are asked below. If you don’t find the answers you’re looking for, feel free to contact us by phone at 888-978-4283 or online.

What crash rating levels do TYMETAL crash beams achieve?

TYMETAL crash beam systems are available at K4 (ASTM F2656 M30/P1) and K12 (M50/P1) certification levels, with both DoS-rated and ASTM-certified products in the product line. These ratings confirm the beam will stop a vehicle of the specified mass traveling at the rated impact speed within the certified penetration distance.

How are crash beams anchored and how much foundation is required?

TYMETAL crash beams are mounted to reinforced steel posts embedded in engineered concrete foundations, with foundation depth and rebar layout specified by TYMETAL to achieve the certified crash rating. Surface-mount and shallow-mount configurations are available for select models where full embedment is not possible, subject to rating limitations.

Can crash beams integrate with security gates or bollard systems?

TYMETAL crash beams are designed to work alongside crash-rated gates and bollards in a unified perimeter security system. Beam, gate, and bollard products within TYMETAL’s crash-rated line share compatible rating levels, allowing specifiers to design a consistent perimeter where all elements are certified to the same vehicle impact standard.

What is the recommended inspection and repair process after impact?

Following a vehicle impact, the beam, mounting hardware, operator system, and foundation anchors must all be professionally inspected before the barrier is returned to service. Deformed or damaged beam components must be replaced with TYMETAL-specified parts to restore full certified performance — field repairs to structural members are not acceptable substitutes for replacement.

What materials and coating options are used to resist corrosion and wear?

TYMETAL crash beam systems are fabricated with protective coatings including hot-dip galvanizing and powder coat finishes suitable for outdoor and high-corrosion environments. Hydraulic operator components are housed in sealed enclosures rated for weather exposure, protecting internal mechanisms from moisture, dust, and temperature extremes.
