Types of Security Gates: Choosing the Right One

Security gates are more than just access gates — they are a first line of defense and a critical element in implementing a robust security strategy. Selecting the right type of commercial security gate is vital to controlling access to the property, and it must also blend with the surrounding landscape, architecture and existing security features such as fencing.

TYMETAL Corp. has manufactured perimeter security solutions since 1985. Over the last four decades, we have helped countless facilities make the best security gate selections. From standard to custom solutions, we offer a broad range of security gate types with various features and options. Decades of experience help us understand the process our clients must go through when choosing between different security gates.

This guide is designed to help you make the best possible choice based on three primary steps:

  1. Understanding security gate types and what makes each type unique
  2. Evaluating various features and benefits of different gates
  3. Considering critical factors to guide you to the most appropriate gate for your unique property and security needs.

Different Types of Security Gates

All security gates offer a means of controlling access to the property at hand. You can find security gates installed at various types of properties, including industrial complexes, manufacturing facilities, airports, schools, and more. Not all gates are suitable for all property types, however, which is why it’s essential to consider all available security gate types before choosing one. Initially, determine if the need is for a vehicular or pedestrian access gate.

Cantilever Slide Gates

If you need a gate that smoothly slides open and closed to secure large openings with minimal risk of the gate interfering with traffic as it enters and exits, a cantilever gate may be the ideal solution. TYMETAL cantilever gates can be installed as single gates to close openings up to 60 feet, or they can be installed with a bi-parting configuration to close openings as wide as 120 feet. They are available in manual and automated configurations and typically used for vehicular access. Manual configurations can be used for pedestrian access as well.

Heavy Duty Swing Gates

Do you need to secure an area that lacks adequate space for a sliding gate? Heavy duty swing gates offer lightweight, easy operation and durable construction that withstands rigorous use. The gate swings open, moving inward or outward much like a door opens to grant access. Heavy Duty swing Gates can be automated or operated manually and suitable for pedestrian access in manual configurations.

Vertical Pivot Gates

Another alternative where space isn’t available for a slide gate is a Vertical Pivot Gate. Vertical Pivot Gates are automated and intended for vehicular access only. When opening they pivot open from a point in the lower right or left such that they rotate 90 degrees upward when fully open (much like a simple traffic arm). They are efficient, secure and require much less overall space than a slide gate. They are available in single and bi-parting configurations.

Overhead Slide Gates

In some settings, space requirements and demanding or rigorous use demand a unique solution. Heavy duty overhead gates offer low maintenance, reliable security in areas with limited space for a swing or slide gate as well as those in extreme environments. Versatile design and heavy-duty, high-quality construction make these ideal for more demanding settings, including those that place above average stress on the system. Available in automated and manually operated configurations.

Box Frame Roller and Telescoping Gates

Large openings can present a challenge to secure. However, Box Frame Roller huge gates, which include designs like box frame and telescoping box frame roller gates, can still provide high-level security while spanning single clear opening widths up to 250’; 500’ for the bi-parting version. If space is an issue, the Telescoping version collapses into approximately half the clear opening width when in the open position (maximum single clear opening width is 83’; if bi-parting 166’).

Vertical Lift Gates

A vertical lift gate is a good automated gate alternative for larger clear openings that have a limited amount of space available to each side of the opening. It can span single clear opening widths up to 60’. Clear opening heights up to 22’ allow clearance for larger vehicles. By virtue of design the Vertical lift Gate is an extremely secure system that opens and closes quickly. When opening or closing the gate panel need only travel 14’ to 22’ straight up. The operating speed is between 1.5 and 2.2 feet/second, with a soft start and stop feature. In the event of a power outage the gate panel can be easily raised or lowered by a convenient drop out crank handle.

Bi-Folding Speed Gates

Another option for properties with limited space, bi-folding security gates perform well in high-cycle, rigorous environments. Ideal for areas with minimal space, TYMETAL’s bi-folding gates arrive ready to simply bolt in place and power up, with minimal assembly required before use.

Pedestrian Swing Gates

Managing the flow of pedestrian traffic and pedestrian access to specific areas can be critical. With TYMETAL’s various pedestrian swing gate options, it’s possible to provide visually appealing, low-maintenance security in a variety of settings. When opting for a pedestrian swing gate, it’s equally important to match it with a locking device that best suits your needs. Typical locking device options include a panic bar and electric strike. Tymetal’s 2150 style pedestrian swing gate is among the most secure in the industry.

Custom Gate Designs

Although you have a variety of standard options to choose from, security gates aren’t always a one-size-fits-all proposition. TYMETAL’s expert team can help support all the site’s security needs, with free specification and drawing services to help you design a custom security gate. For areas with unique requirements, whether they are security-related or geared toward the flow of traffic, a custom gate can provide an exceptional solution.

Understanding the Variety of Security Gate Options

TYMETAL understands that each type of property has its own unique requirements. Whether the site is a high-traffic area, extreme-use environment, or high-security complex, it’s possible to find a gate to meet your needs.

Key Features of Different Security Gate Types

The features of each gate help it stand out and can guide the decision-making process. It’s essential to consider elements such as:

  • Clear opening width and available space to each side
  • Vehicular of pedestrian
  • Manual or automated operation for the gate (pedestrian gates not automated)
  • Overhead restrictions, if any
  • Unusual grade conditions
  • Overhead clearance needed
  • Rate of traffic – open/close cycles per day
  • Gate style – the way the gate opens and closes (swing, slide, overhead, pivot, etc.)
  • Available infills and finishes

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Security Gate

Getting a feel for the type of commercial security gates that are available and the ways the different features match your site’s requirements only provide part of the picture. To choose the ideal security solutions that meet a property’s unique needs, it’s critical to consider the following three requirements:

Durability and Longevity

Commercial security gate systems are an investment that should withstand the test of time and estimated level of use. TYMETAL performs comprehensive testing on all gates to verify that each gate will perform as intended. Reliability in all weather conditions, the ability to withstand high-volume use, and durable construction are hallmarks of high-quality perimeter security solutions.

Security Level Requirements

Whether the gate offers convenience and traffic control or provides adherence to strict security protocols makes a difference. Elements like impact resistance, ease of use, reliable deterrence, and the versatility to suit facilities and properties of varying sizes and security needs are often overlooked. The type of gate needed depends on the overall goal. A gate needed to control access or manage the flow of traffic will be different than one designed to secure the property from threats or prevent intruders.

Aesthetic Considerations for Security Gates

Different types of commercial security gates offer varying aesthetics to compliment surrounding landscape and architectural features. Choose from varying powder coated finishes or custom designs to pick security gates that will not only work effectively, but also look great for years to come.
